Are you fascinated by the intricate world where biology and engineering intersect? The Loudon Lab at the University of California, Irvine, explores the fascinating realm of insect science, bio-inspired design, and bio-mimicry. Our research depends on a thriving ecosystem of plants that serve as hosts and habitats for the insects we study. We are seeking a dedicated and observant Green House Assistant to nurture this critical foundation of our work.
As our Green House Assistant, you will be the primary caretaker of our research plant collection. This is more than just watering plants; you will be an essential part of our scientific process, ensuring the health and viability of the botanical subjects that make our entomological research possible. You will be responsible for the daily care of a diverse range of plants, implementing precise watering and nutrient schedules, propagating new specimens, and managing the greenhouse environment. Your keen eye will be our first line of defense in identifying and managing pests and diseases, utilizing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques that protect both our plants and our precious insect populations.
Success in this role requires a passion for the quiet, methodical work of cultivation, a deep sense of responsibility, and an appreciation for how a healthy plant can unlock new scientific discoveries. Must Haves
Essential requirements for this position
- Demonstrated experience in plant care, either professionally or through significant personal projects.
- Ability to work independently and meticulously follow detailed protocols for watering, nutrient application, and pest control.
- Strong observational skills to identify early signs of plant stress, disease, or pest infestation.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting up to 40 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working in a warm, humid greenhouse environment.
Nice to Haves
Preferred qualifications and extras
- Previous experience working in a research greenhouse or academic lab setting.
- Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles and techniques.
- Familiarity with specific host plants relevant to entomological studies.
- Coursework in botany, horticulture, entomology, or a related biological science.
